Brief
The client’s brief asked for the design of a new family home on a land plot in the northern suburbs of Athens. A detached house built in the 70s and based on the principles of the modern movement stood in this plot of land for many generations. It was an environment rich in visual stimuli for the owner while he was growing up.
One of his conditions for the new design was to transfer the memory of the qualities of his childhood home into a new shell that will host all the future needs of his expanded family.
Our approach
Our proposal for the residence is spread over two floors. On the ground floor we positioned the common areas of the residence, i.e. an open plan living/dining room, a kitchen, a meditation area and back of house uses. On the first floor we positioned the private areas which include two master bedrooms, two bedrooms and an office. All spaces have large openings that let the eye travel towards the courtyards.
The residence is designed in such a way to maximize privacy by moving the main living areas to the back of the plot. Most of the openings are facing the central courtyard and the backyard, while the openings to the street are limited to reduce noise polution.
The materials that have been used -exposed concrete and corten steel- share a common pursuit: they allow the patina of time to leave its mark and mutate the appearance of the building. The architectural design is further annotated and highlighted by the use of rough textured light red plaster on specific parts of the facades.
In the interior the concept of the preexisting vintage mosaic floors is deconstructed. Large marble pieces create a new floor composition of bold geometric elements combined with custom wooden carpentry. Tinos Green Marble and Ettore Sottsass inspired wood veneer adds to the intended atmosphere.
The re-interpretation of modern design aesthetics into a contemporary architectural language pays homage to the nostalgia of the client’s childhood memories.
